In last week’s San Jose Mercury News, this was a full page ad, subtitled “Open Letter to Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County Health Officer”
I reached out to Ms. Altmaier in congratulations and support, and received this email in return:
Dear All,
Thank you so much for your emails, and the words of support. It is easy, in the midst of our isolation, to feel alone and helpless, but together we can drive change, if we are determined and act with conviction.
I placed the ad to provide a rallying point, and to start to change the narrative around Cody. She has established what can only be called a dictatorship in our County, together with her nominal superior, County Exec Jeff Smith. She is acting with a level of caprice and high-handedness that is untethered to health and safety.
There are several avenues being explored to take action including business groups, the governor, city councils, et al. I will update you on status and how you can help in each of these areas within the next few days, as soon as they’ve crystallized a little more. The focus will NOT solely be on our Supervisors, who have shown themselves to be lacking in backbone, resolve, and initiative, with their spineless claims that they can do nothing.
There is one thing you can do immediately. I’ve attached a more easily readable pdf of the ad taken from the Merc website. Please send it in email and on social media to the people you know, and ask them to email me at the address in the ad if they are in support, and if they are able/interested to help in any way, to mention that too. (Several of you have already expressed ability/interest in doing so, I am recording that.)

I encourage you to share it with friends. It is good to see someone stand up and be vocal in this manner. It took someone with the ability to pay for a full page ad, otherwise I’m certain the letter would otherwise have never been printed. We are at a critical juncture for the lifting of Shelter in Place orders–now is the time publicize this letter for maximum leverage.

What would make you think I would approve of this? Paulette Altmaier is asking legitimate questions in a respectful manner. She is trying to engage in dialogue that seems to be resisted by Dr. Cody and County Officials. Hopefully you don’t believe that all requests for dialogue in these important matters are to be judged by the worst actors like you allude to above. This is what is known as an “ad hominin” attack. I’m guessing you are better than that.
